What the WGA Strike Can Teach Us about SEO
The WGA Strike Can Teach Us Some Important Lessons about SEO
If you watch the news or really any television at all you probably know that that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike yesterday. I am not going to go into great deal about the reason for the strike but the basic reason is that they believe they deserve increased compensation for DVD sales and Internet Downloads. If you want to read more about the reasons behind the strike visit the NJ Star Ledger Blog or almost any news source and you should be able to get the low down. What I want to discuss here is what this strike can teach SEO’s, especially in regards to content.
So What Does the Strike Have to do with SEO?
The short answer is that it reinforces the notion that Content is King. Content rules and is important for search engine positioning success. Obviously, content is also important to the success of all types of media. Without great content creators (writers) most TV shows will fail, no matter how talented the actors are. The same thing applies to websites. You could have the best product in the world but without good content you will have a hard time gaining attention and traction in the search engines.
Sure, building links will help but they can only go so far and without great content it is difficult to get the really good editorial links that the engines love. Links are like reviews and word of mouth for TV Shows and movies. Sure, media companies will pay some reviewers for great reviews but the paid reviews are usually easy for the general public to spot. Now the engines may not be able to identify paid links as well but they can find the really obvious instances. Real reviews and your friends telling you how great a show is are going to hold more weight to you and may actually make you check out what they are talking about. This word of mouth is usually due to the great content in the show or movie and it attracts more viewers and more positive reviews. Just like real editorial links that link to you because of the great content on your site. You get more visitors and more link love from the engines.
Make Sure Great Content is the Cornerstone of Your SEO Plan
Content is what makes a great movie or TV show just like content is what makes a great website. With the WGA on strike many quality shows are now airing repeats or not even being shown now. Many SEO’s talk about great content but then forget about actually creating it. Instead they worry about links and how to get links. Instead they should worry about creating the great content that will attract the great links. Sure it might take a bit of marketing to get the word out (just like most TV Shows and Movies) but if enough visitors find your information useful you will begin to get your links. And you won’t even have to worry about striking writers asking for residuals on the content that helped you generate the great links, great rankings, and increased profits. At least not yet.
