I am an SEO not an IT professional

This is something I have wanted to get off of my chest for a while and since I have some free time now I guess I can finally do it. It seems that many of my relatives think that since I work in the Internet industry they believe that I am an IT professional. Whenever they have an issue with their computers they want me to fix them. Honestly, I have no problem taking a look and attempting to figure out their problem. I am always willing to help when I can but when it comes to more complex issues I am just not capable of helping. I can deal with most simple tasks and even some intermediate problems but just because I am a search marketing professional does not mean I can fix your computer when it blows up.

Just because I work in search does not mean I am the family IT guy

I am not Nick Burns and if I was you would probably not want to ask me to help anyway. The biggest issues is simply a lack of understanding about what I do. Many of my relatives simply don’t understand what SEO is. They assume that since I work in a tech focused field that I am a computer guru.  I suppose it is partially my fault because I have grown tired of trying to explain what it is that I do. It does not seem to matter though. No matter how much I explain it some of my relatives simply can’t grasp it. They can’t understand why I can’t help them fix their 6 year old spyware/malware/virus infected computers. So I have given up. From now on if I can’t help I will just tell them the Intertubes have been updated and they need a new computer to get there. If that does not work I can always send them to Geek Squad.

Yeah, every time I visit family I have a line of people asking me to see if I can figure out some problem they are having with their computers. How are you doing by the way? We are in the process of buying a house right now.

So true Pilo. I get asked ALL OF THE TIME to help out with computers. Lots of time with networking issues that above my head. I have to spend my own time learning what is wrong and then fixing it when the person could have easily done this themselves.

Jaan, I do the same thing. I spend a ton of time trying to understand and then fix the problem when they could have done the exact same thing.

I have the same problem too. When I visit relatives they always ask if could take a look at their computer. It would be quite rude to tell them to visit the computer repair shop.
